Ananda

The Buddha's cousin and personal attendant for the last twenty-five years of his life. Foremost among the bhikkhus in learning, in memory, in good conduct, in steadfastness, and in personal attendance. The night before the First Council, he attained arahantship between waking and lying down.

Angulimala

A brahmin youth manipulated by his teacher into the vow of a thousand killings, wearing a garland of fingers from his victims. When the Buddha walked into his forest, Angulimala chased him and could not catch up. "Stop, recluse!" he shouted. The Buddha replied: "I have stopped, Angulimala. It is you who has not." He laid down his sword and was ordained on the spot.
