Teresa of Ávila was a Spanish Carmelite nun, mystic, and reformer whose writings on prayer and the soul's journey to God remain classics of Christian spirituality. Her Interior Castle describes seven mansions of the soul culminating in spiritual marriage with the divine. Together with John of the Cross, she founded the Discalced Carmelites and shaped the contemplative tradition of the West.
