Life and lineage

John of the Cross was a Spanish Carmelite mystic, poet, and reformer whose writings on the dark night of the soul and the ascent of Mount Carmel are cornerstones of Christian contemplative literature. A close collaborator of Teresa of Ávila, he endured imprisonment and persecution by his own religious order. His poetry describes the soul's purification and ecstatic union with the divine through unknowing love.
