The Sasa Jataka. The Bodhisattva, born as a hare, lives in the forest with three friends — an otter, a jackal, a monkey. On the day of fasting, a beggar comes asking for food. The other three offer what they have caught and gathered. The hare, having nothing, throws itself into the fire to feed the stranger. The beggar is revealed as Sakra, lord of the gods, who paints the hare's likeness on the moon — where it remains, for all who have ever looked up.
