Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk and one of the most influential Catholic writers of the twentieth century. His autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain introduced monastic contemplation to a wide audience, while his later writings engaged deeply with Zen, Taoism, and Sufism. His death in Bangkok at a monastic dialogue conference made him a symbol of the meeting of East and West.
