Rabia al-Adawiyya of Basra is one of the earliest and most celebrated Sufi saints, credited with shifting Sufism from ascetic fear to ecstatic love of God. Her poems and sayings — including the famous prayer to be shown the Fire and the Garden so that she might love God for God's own sake — remain central to the Sufi lexicon of devotion.
