Master Sheng Yen was one of the most important Chinese Chan masters of the modern era and the founder of Dharma Drum Mountain in Taiwan, one of the four "Mountains" of contemporary Taiwanese Buddhism. He held dual dharma transmissions in both the Linji and Caodong (Sōtō) lineages — an exceptional ecumenical achievement — and earned a doctorate in Buddhist Studies from Rissho University in Tokyo. His Silent Illumination retreat instructions and his 108 Adages of Wisdom are widely circulated in English.
