Master Hsuan Hua brought authentic Chinese Chan to the West and founded the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Ukiah, California, and the Buddhist Text Translation Society. His magnum opus is the eight-volume English commentary on the Shurangama Sutra. He insisted on full Vinaya observance for his Western monastic disciples, an unusual and demanding requirement at the time.
