Maezumi Roshi was one of the most consequential Sōtō Zen teachers to settle in the West and the founder of the Zen Center of Los Angeles. He gave dharma transmission to twelve heirs — including Bernie Glassman, John Daido Loori, Joan Halifax, and Dennis Genpo Merzel — whose lineages now form a substantial portion of contemporary American Zen.
