Ledi Sayadaw was the foremost Burmese scholar-monk of his generation and the principal architect of the modern Burmese vipassana revival. His teaching of insight meditation to lay practitioners — extraordinary at the time — was the headwater of both the Mahasi and the Ledi-U Ba Khin-Goenka lineages that together produced the global vipassana movement. The Manual of Insight (Vipassanā Dīpanī) is a foundational text.
