Laozi is the semi-legendary founder of Taoism and the putative author of the Tao Te Ching, the most translated work in world literature after the Bible. Whether a single historical figure or a composite, his voice inaugurated a tradition that sees the Tao — the Way — as the unnamable source, pattern, and return of all things. The text counsels wu wei, effortless action aligned with the natural flow, and the cultivation of emptiness as the highest fullness.
