Black Elk was an Oglala Lakota holy man whose visions and teachings were preserved in the book Black Elk Speaks. A survivor of the Wounded Knee Massacre, he carried the sacred pipe and the hoop of the nation through immense cultural destruction. His great vision of the sacred hoop and the flowering tree at the center of the world has become a foundational text of Native American spirituality.
