Anapanasati in sixteen steps

Students rush through the sixteen steps as if checking boxes. This is not how the practice works. Each step can take years. Each step contains the others. The first step — knowing you are breathing in long, you are breathing out long — is already the entire path. The rest is unfolding what is already there.

Twenty-eight rains

A friend asked what twenty-eight years as a bhikkhu has taught me. The answer surprised me: how little I know, and how that no longer worries me. The certainty I had at year three has long burned off. What replaces it is not knowledge. It is presence. Presence does not need to know.
