Metta is not nice

Western students often confuse metta with niceness. It is not. Metta is the unwavering wish for the welfare of all beings — including those you find unbearable. This is not nice. It is fierce. It is the hardest practice I know.

Bangkok metta

Sitting metta on the BTS Skytrain this morning. The man across from me looked exhausted. I sent him metta. He never knew. It does not matter that he never knew. The practice is the giver’s, not the receiver’s.
