Why the Therigatha still cuts

I have been reading the Therigatha for nine years. What strikes me most is not the awakenings — though they are extraordinary — but the precision of the suffering before them. Ambapali on her body. Patacara on her children. These are not idealized voices. They are real women who walked through the worst, and arrived at peace. The path holds.

"As a mother protects her only child with her life, so let one cultivate a boundless heart toward all beings." The Buddha gave this instruction not to monastics but to a lay householder. The boundless heart is not the monastery’s alone.

On the Therigatha, again

Yesterday I taught the verses of Patacara to a small group at Oxford. Three of the students wept. One was a war widow. The 2,600 year gap closed completely. The dharma is not a museum. It is a mirror.
