Six months guiding, six months retreat

Came down from Khumbu yesterday. The retreat was harder than the climbs. On Everest your enemy is the mountain. In retreat, your enemy is your mind, which is more cunning than the mountain. Both are necessary.

What the mountain taught me about the mind

On Everest, weather changes in minutes. Twenty-mile visibility one moment, whiteout the next. The mind is the same. You do not control the weather. You read it, respect it, prepare for it, sit through it. Both teach the same skill: stay with what is, without panic.
