The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, but the wise one keeps his heedfulness as his best treasure.

The Buddha gives heedfulness a price tag. It is the wise one's dhana — wealth, treasure. The teaching reframes attention not as a duty owed but as a possession to be guarded. The foolish, by contrast, indulge in heedlessness as if it were free. The verse offers an economic intuition: attention is the underlying capital of the spiritual life, and one's relationship to it is what determines whether one is wealthy or poor in the only sense that matters at the end.
