Ever grows the glory of him who is energetic, mindful and pure in conduct, discerning and self-controlled, righteous and heedful.

The verse lists six conditions of a person whose stature grows over time: energy, mindfulness, purity of conduct, discernment in action, self-control, righteous heedfulness. The Buddha is describing the texture of an effective life — not a saintly one. The word translated "glory" — yaso — is closer to "reputation" or "weight in the world." The teaching is unflashy and worldly: these qualities accrue, and they accrue visibly. The discipline of the inner life is not separate from a publicly meaningful one.
